Pop - DIY - 150

Objective:

Make popcorn on the stovetop.

Details:

When was the last time you popped popcorn without the aid of a microwave or electric popper? For some of you, it might have been a long time. For others, you may have never done it!

1) Research methods for popping popcorn on the stovetop. You can choose any method you like, as long as it utilizes a stovetop.

2) Pop your popcorn! Follow the method you chose from start to finish until you end up with your popped popcorn.

3)Take a photograph to document your stovetop popping escapades and post it in our Facebook Group.

4) Along with your photo, tell us about your adventure!

Pop Micro Objective - Research - 50

Objective:

Research “pop culture” from the year you were born.

Details:

1) It’s time for a bit of light research!

Identify the following from your birth year:

  • Best selling book

  • Highest grossing movie

  • Most watched television show

  • Most popular song

2) In the comments below, answer the following questions:

a) What was the most popular media (book, movie, tv show and song) for your birth year?

b) Were you surprised in any way by what you found?

Pop Micro Objective - Visit - 50

Objective:

Patronize a local "mom and pop" shop.

Details:

Merriam-Webster defines “mom and pop” as an adjective that describes “being or relating to a small owner-operated business” and “small scale”. Think small independent business- the opposite of a large chain.

1) Identify a mom and pop business in your area that you’d like to visit. This could be a grocery store, brewery, candle shop… the choice is up to you! Just make sure it fits the definition of “mom and pop”.

Consider choosing somewhere you’ve never been or have not visited in a while! (This is not required, but could make for a more fun experience!)

2) Visit your mom and pop shop! While you’re there, consider buying something to support the small business.

3) Document your visit with a photograph and post it in our Facebook Group.

4) Along with your photo, tell us about your adventure!

Pop - Research - 200

Objective:

Create a bubble show that properly compliments the ethos of "go big or go home".

Details:

1) It’s time to DREAM a bit. What would it mean to create a bubble show that you’ll never forget? Something really, REALLY big?

Consider the following:

  • Who would you invite? (The more people the better!)

  • Where would you host this event? (Your backyard? A local park?)

  • What supplies might you need? (Multiple bubble blowing devices are ecouraged!)

  • What will you do to make this bubble making extravaganza truly epic?

Your goal here is to “go big or go home”! We’re talking BIG bubbles over a BIG area.

2) Host your event! Gather those you invited and lead them in enacting your epic bubble vision.

3) Document your bubble show with a photograph and post it in our Facebook Group.

Note: This is also a great time to tackle the “Pop” photography objective!

4) Alongside your photo, tell us about your experience!

Pop - Photography - 200

Objective:

Create a portrait entitled "Pop!" and write an artist's statement to justify your reasoning.

Details:

1) If you were to take an artistic photo entitled “Pop!”, what would your subject matter be? Take some time to brainstorm ideas and choose the one that speaks to you the most.

2) Take your photo! Do your best to take the time to stage and create a photo you’re proud of.

Note: You are the planner and director of this photo. As long as you “set up the shot,” you may enlist an assistant to snap the shot.

3) Take a bit of time to research photography artist’s statements. We suggest starting with this page from Art School Portal, as it provides both a description of what to include in your statement, as well as examples. Keep in mind that while many artist statements describe a collection of work, you’ll be describing a single photo.

4) Write an artist’s statement for your photograph.

5) Share your photo, along with your accompanying artist statement, in our Facebook Group.

Pop Micro Objective - DIY - 50

Objective:

Make and send a “pop up” card.

Details:

There is nothing better than the thoughtfulness of gifting someone with a handmade care. Or is there? What about gifting them a handmade POP UP card?! What the heck is a “pop up” card? It’s exactly what it sounds like; A greeting card which contains an element that pops up when opened. For this micro objective, you are tasked with creating one of your own.

1) Find a tutorial. You could consult a book, search pinterest for ideas, ask for help at your local paper crafts store, or do something else entirely. Learn in the way that works best for you!

2) Gather your supplies. Consult your tutorial for a list of supplies you’ll need. At the minimum, you’ll need paper and adhesive.

3) Create your pop up card!

4) Take a photo of your completed card and share and share it in our Facebook Group.

5) Give your card to someone you think will appreciate it! Feel free to either gift the card in person or send it via snail mail.

Pop - Visit - 600

Objective:

Imbibe in a “Fizzy Flight” through tasting and rating a variety of soda brands or flavors.

Details:

1)  Identify between one and six soda brands and/or flavors you’d like to try. (This objective is worth 100 points per soda, up to 600 points total.) The criteria for choosing soda’s is up to you! It might be fun to give yourself parameters, such as choosing exclusively colas from different brands, only choosing obscure soda flavors, or attempting to find local brands.

Ideas for choosing soda’s include:

  • Head to a store that specializes in sodas and browse the shelves for something fun.

  • Host a Fizzy Flight get together and ask each guest to bring a bottle of their choice to share.

  • Browse the internet for reccomendations. (Or perhaps your fellow scouts have suggstions for you!)

  • Tackle this objective organically over time by keeping your eyes peeled for what interests you. When you stumble upon new varieties, add them to your fizzy flight.

Remember- Quest Scouts is all about trying new things! Sure, you can go with run of the mill, popular soda’s you've likely tried before, but you’ll get more out of this objective if you expand your horizons.

2) Print out a "Fizzy Flight" soda rating sheet. (For best results when printing, hit “fit to page.”)

3) Sample and rate the sodas of your choosing using the Fizzy Flight soda rating sheet.

Make sure to record:

  • The location you bought the soda and/or where it originated from

  • The brand of soda

  • The fizz level of the soda (1-5, with five representing maximum fizz)

  • Your rating of the soda (1-5, with five representing the BEST SODA EVER!)

  • Any notes your might want to include

  • A diagram of the soda’s label (or you could cut and paste a portion of the label to the sheet!)

4) Document your soda tasting adventure(s) with at least one photo and post it in our Facebook Group.

A) Each soda in your flight (maximum six) is worth 100 points, for a total of up to 600 points. B) The "Fizzy Flight" does not have to be completed in a single day, so feel free to take your time! C) For the purposes of this objective, a “soda” is any carbonated beverage.

5) When you have completed your Fizzy Flight, let us know which soda was your favorite in the comments below.

Pop Micro Objective - Literature - 50

Objective:

Engage in the nostalgia of "Pop Rocks", then write about a related memory.

Details:

1) Acquire a packet of Pop Rocks!

2) Get yourself into a mindful state. You’re going to be eating your Pop Rocks, but as you do, we want you to be aware of any thoughts and feelings the experience brings up. Put yourself in a situation where you can best focus on your senses and emotions while experiencing the Pop Rocks.

3) Eat your Pop Rocks! As you do, be mindful.

Ask yourself:

  • What am I experiencing in the here and now as I eat this?

  • Can I remember times in the past when I’ve eaten this? (What about the first time?)

  • How does this exercise make me feel?

4) Inspired by the exercise, write a short story.

The nitty gritty:

  • Make sure to give your story a title to set the stage.

  • Your story should have elements of non-fiction, but can include fictional elements as well.

  • Your story can, but does not have to, include Pop Rocks.

  • Your story should be between 300-1000 words long.
