Such Great Heights - Literature - 300

Objective:

Set and meet a lofty month long reading challenge.

Details:

1) Take a moment to evaluate your reading habits. Some of us read multiple books a month, while others haven’t dusted off a book in years. Which side of the spectrum do you fall on? What do your reading habits look like?

2) Based on your reading habit evaluation, create a month long reading challenge for yourself! The key word here is “challenge”, and what is challenging for one of us might be easy for another.

Challenge Ideas:

  • Read X amount of pages

  • Read X books from a genre you don’t usually read

  • Read X books that satisfy Quest Scouts reading objectives

  • Read in a format (audio books, physical books) that you don’t normally read in

  • Create a one month book club with a friend!

  • Anything else you can think of!

3) Once you’ve chosen your challenge, tell us about it! Head over to our Facebook Group and create a post.

Include in your post:

(a) What your challenge is and

(b) When your challenge will start and end.

(Note: Your challenge should be a month long, but can start whenever you would like!)

4) Successfully complete your challenge!

5) Head back to our Facebook Group and tell us about your challenge!

Include in your post:

(a) A reminder of what your challenge was

(b) When your challenge was intended to start and end

(c) What did you enjoy about the challenge?

(d) What didn’t you enjoy about the challenge?

(e) If you were to do this challenge again, is there anything you would change?

Micro Objective - Such Great Heights - 50

Objective:

Check off something on your “to do” list in an elevated fashion.

Details:

1) Take a look at your to do list. (Of course, your to do list might only exist in your head.)

2) Choose a task from your list to complete. (If possible, choose an existing task rather than adding a new task to the list.)

3) Raise the bar on the task you chose by doing it just a little bit better than you were planning.

For example, if you were planning to cook a nice dinner for your significant other, cook some dessert as well. Or, if you were planning on cleaning your bathroom, dust off the bathroom light fixture you've been overlooking.

4) Let us know what task you chose and how you took it "to the next level" in the comments below.

Micro Objective - Such Great Heights - 50

Objective:

Create "Index Card Art" inspired by the provided prompt.

Details:

This micro objective is part of our ongoing series, "index card art." We chose index cards for two reasons. First, index cards are inexpensive cheap and readily available. We don't expect that it will be difficult for any of you to procure an index card. Second, many who don't consider themselves "artists" tend to stress about creating or sharing art. Using an index card instead of a sketch book lends itself to silliness. Have fun with the prompt! We're not looking for perfection, just a good time. You can save your index cards and look back at them over time, or throw them away. The choice is up to you!

1) Gather your supplies. You'll need an index card (4x6 or 5x7) and something to draw with. (Pencil, pen, markers... you get the point!)

2) Interpret the prompt below to make your index card art.

Towering City Skyline

3) Take a photo of your Index Card Art and post it in our Facebook group.

Members Only MQ - Such Great Heights - 50

Our Member's Only Micro Quests are our special monthly thank you to our subscribing members. Without our members Quest Scouts would not exist. This month's MOMQ asks you to estimate how tall some of the "world's  tallest" are.

Objective:

1) Download and print the puzzle from our members only page, or use the back of the Such Great Heights quest card that Scout Pack Members will receive in the mail.

2) Without looking up the answers, estimate the heights of each of the items listed.

3) Add all 8 of your estimates together. This is your total estimated height.

4) Revisit the members only page and download the answers.

5) Take the difference between your total estimated height and the total listed on the answer sheet.

6) Answer the following questions in the comments below:

-How many feet off was your estimate? Was your estimate higher or lower than the actual height?

-What was your best estimate? What was your worst estimate?

-Did you enjoy this exercise, or should we never speak of it again?

Such Great Heights - Games - 250

Objective:

Play a “tower building” dexterity game.

Details:

You've probably played Jenga before. In Jenga, players take turns pulling blocks from a tower until the tower falls. Did you know there is a whole slough of "don't let your tower fall" dexterity games? For this objective, choose a game that asks you to build toward the skies!

Objective:

1) Play one of the "tower building" games listed below.

-Bausack (Also called Bandu)

-Jenga

-Tumblin' Dice Timber

-Cornerstone Essential

-Palazzo Paletti (Or it's little sibling, Villa Paletti)

-Terror in Meeple City (This is more of a "tower destroying" game but is so fun we're adding it to the list. This game is also known as Rampage, but make sure you get the correct game as there are different games with the same title.)

2) Post a photo of yourself playing the game in our our Facebook group.

Such Great Heights - DIY - 200

Objective:

Construct a mint tin catapult.

Details:

Let’s make small objects soar to great heights with a mini-catapult! Sometimes it's fun to create something silly, and this definitely fits the bill. Give your finished result to a lucky kid or keep it on your desk.

1) Find a tutorial that works for you.

The above video is great because it provides step by step instructions. If you'd like you can download instructions for $1.99. (Note: Quest Scouts is not affiliated with this site. You can probably get by without them, but might find them helpful.)

Instructables also has a good tutorial.

Still not satisfied? Googling "Mint Tin Catapult" will bring up several variations, so feel free to make one of those instead.

2) Construct your mint tin catapult.

3) Take a photo of your finished catapult and share it in our our Facebook group.
